Frequently Asked Questions

Most questions can be answered by reading the Team Handbook (link above), however, here are our most frequently asked questions and answers.
Is my dancer too young to join the team? Should we wait until next year?
We welcome dancers as young as 4 years old, but it’s not uncommon for dancers to join at a later age. Starting younger allows dancers to be introduced earlier to advanced training and stage experience. That said, we do offer beginner-level teams for older dancers, so joining later is absolutely an option.

Boys program? My son loves to dance but only wants to compete in hip hop.
We’re proud to offer a very successful boys' program. Our male dancers have the opportunity to compete as part of our Boys Crew, and participation includes one recital class, one competition class, and involvement in our production for dancers in 2nd grade and older. In addition to the Boys Crew, some male dancers also participate in the co-ed large group hip-hop routines alongside our female dancers. We also offer opportunities for male dancers to explore other styles, including lyrical, acro, and more. If your male dancer prefers to start with hip-hop only, that’s absolutely fine. While we encourage male dancers to branch out and try additional genres over time, competing exclusively in hip-hop is fully supported within our boys' program. Please Note:  We do not have an age 8 and under Boys Crew at this time, Dancers ages 8 and under may only have the option to participate in the co-ed large group hip-hop routines, however it is our goal to try and start an 8 and under boys Crew this season.

How much will this cost? How many classes are required?
At a minimum, dancers are required to take:
  • One recital and/or level technique class
  • One competition choreography class. (Jazz is the required competition genre for our female dancers)
  • Production choreography class (Grades 2 and up. Meets once a month)
  • In most cases, a ballet class
This typically adds up to 2-3 classes per week and our production dance that meets once a month. Please refer to the TUITION chart for exact pricing. Keep in mind that many dancers choose to take additional classes beyond the minimum to further develop their skills.

What is the average amount of dances a dancer competes in?
Dancers are encouraged to participate in as many routines as they are eligible for; however, not every dancer will have the skill set required for every genre. Our team supports a range of commitment levels. Some dancers may choose to perform in just 2–3 routines, while others—who treat dance as their primary sport—may participate in up to 15 competition pieces. We encourage every family to select the number of routines that best aligns with their dancer’s goals, abilities, and financial considerations

What level would my dancer compete?

We have several level based teams, but many of our groups do overlap. By the end of the summer program, each dancer will be evaluated and placed on the level team that best fits their ability.
  • Level Pre Team: Grades Prek-1
  • Level 1: Primary Team
  • Level 2A: Secondary/Intermediate Team
  • Level 2B: Intermediate Team
  • Level 3: Elite Team
  • Boys Crew
Your dancer will generally compete within that team level. If they qualify for a solo, they will compete their solo at that same level. Please note that a dancer may not compete a solo at a level lower than their assigned team level. Team placement begins with level teams; however, dancers may also be selected for specialty groups. These specialty groups are formed based on dance genre rather than level, so specialty placements may compete at a lower or higher level than their assigned level team. If you are joining us from another studio, please keep in mind that placement levels may differ from what you are used to. Each studio structures its teams differently, and we maintain our own standards for placement.

How many competitions? How much are entries?
  • Competition Entry fees: Fees are applied per dance, per competition.
    •  3-4 mandatory competitions a season (all within a drivable distance).
      • 2-4 optional competitions for more advanced dancers (all within a drivable distance, we often do at least one optional competition in New Jersey)
    • Estimated Entry Fee (2026 fees):
      • Group/Production: $65-$75
      • Duet/Trio: $75-$125
      • Solo: $120-$250

Do I have to go to Nationals? How far away is Nationals?
Our teams attend Nationals each year in July, the event is always held within driving distance (Past years Nationals: Oceans in Atlantic City, Kalahari in the Poconos, Hershey Park in Pennsylvania). This allows families the flexibility to choose what works best for them—whether that means staying for the entire week or traveling in just for the day of their dancer’s performance. Please note that staying at the host hotel is not required. Families are welcome to choose alternative accommodations that better suit their needs. Nationals are optional for some teams, however select teams, attendance at Nationals is mandatory.
  • Level Pre Team: Nationals optional
  • Level 1: Primary Team - Nationals optional
  • Level 2A: Secondary/Intermediate Team – Nationals required
  • Level 2B: Intermediate Team – Nationals required
  • Level 3: Elite Team – Nationals required
  • Boys Crew: TBA

How much are costumes?
  • Competition Costumes:
    • Competition Catalog Basic: $100-$115,
    • Competition Catalog Embellished: $115-$250
    • Solo/Duo/Trio and specialty dances - Embellished Custom: $150-$400,
    • Recital/Technique Costumes (2026 fees): $85-$110
    • Male Costumes: $30-$150

What additional costs should we expect?
For a full breakdown of expenses—including costumes, competition entry fees, and other seasonal costs—please refer to the team handbook.

My dancer is interested but also plays other sports. Can they do both?
At the beginner level (such as Pre Team and Level 1 teams), there is some flexibility to participate in another sport. As dancers move into intermediate and elite teams, they may still continue other activities, but they must be able to balance both commitments and remain accountable for any missed classes. Each dancer’s capacity will vary depending on their age and schedule. At no time can a dancer miss a competition for another sport or activity.

Will my dancer be on the same team as their friends?
Many of our teams do overlap, and all team members participate together in our production piece. However, team placement is based on skill level and experience. If a dancer is newer and their friend has several years of training, they may be placed on different teams. Our focus is on growth and development—dancers should join the competition team to improve their abilities, not just to be with friends.

What day and times would classes be?
At this time, we’re unfortunately unable to guarantee specific competition choreography class days and times. Final schedules won’t be confirmed until August 1. While we do our best to accommodate religious school commitments, we’re not able to adjust for other extracurricular conflicts due to the size of our team. Dancers are welcome to accept their team placement anytime up until August 1. While you can wait until after August 1 to confirm, please note that placement opportunities may be more limited at that point, as teams and group routines will already be established. Additionally, solos, duets, and trios are typically assigned in July. Dancers who join after that time are unlikely to be considered for those opportunities.

How will I know when fees are due or other important dates?
Our team calendar is available to view throughout the entire season, with the link provided above. It includes all important information such as due dates, competitions, conventions, extra practices, guest teachers, and drop-in classes. Reminder emails are often sent, but it is encouraged to check the team calendar weekly.

How will important information be communicated?
Communication is primarily handled through email. However, all important information can also be found on the team bulletin board or the team calendar, with the links provided above. We occasionally use the Band app to share videos, photos, and quick last-minute reminders.
